This years ‘Vietnam Fun Cup’ event saw a total of twelve different nationalities all fired up and ready for the battle to commence in a fun but always competitive spirit (Vietnam, Russia, Thailand, Greece, UK, Estonia, USA, France, Germany, Poland, Netherlands and Canada).
The first day saw nice clean winds, keeping the waters fairly flat, great for all the new comers to the event. As the wind continued to build, competitors took serious consideration into what size sails to rig. Too big and a return to the beach would be needed mid race, too small and you would be left at the back of the pack. It is not unusual for riders to return to the beach and change sail size mid race if conditions increase or decrease, a gamble for sure.
As the winds locked in for the day, excited riders all took to the water and headed upwind, watches set to a 5 minute count down as the Green flag was raised to signal that the first race was under way. In the women’s division Anna Sagulenko, Daria Danilova and Tran Kim Chi kept the pressure on, seeing Anna repeatedly locking in her first place position.
As the men jostled it was a battle between Maksim Koshkin, Andrey Vashkevich, Alexy Trusov and Truong Ky Tai for top spots. As the races continued there was an epic battle in the middle of the pack between Paul Ikin, Priit Velleste, Jean Charles Drubray and Daniel Callahan.
Day two saw less predictable conditions with some cloud cover reducing the winds stability. For some this was a struggle but for the veteran riders all was taken in their stride and those using camber sails saw themselves at the front of the pack, choosing the right equipment is vital but rider skill wins races.
One the second day we were treated to some show foiling by one of our main Sponsors ‘Starboard’. One of the leading companies and on top of their game in this fast evolving industry, many thanks to Starboard for pushing the limits every year to break through new designs and high performance equipment to keep the windsurf addicts satisfied.
With two high powered windsurf racing days completed, tired eyes arrived back to shore after giving 110% on the water, it was an anxious time for the top riders to wait for the final results but wait they must.
As is the Fun Cup tradition a tantalizing array of both local and international dishes, lovingly prepared to give the exhausted riders exactly what they needed to re fuel the engines in preparation for the evenings fun and entertainment.
When the time arrived the top 3 riders for both men and women were called up to take their places on the podium and receive their rewards for being at the top of their class. Such prizes included, new Starboard 94l Kode windsurf board, Severne sails, Sevenre booms, hotel rooms from White Sands and Anantara, Rum by Sampan, Dragon Beach vouchers for podium winners and all competitors, Freixenets by The Warehouse, fantastic bags, accessories and sports wear from Quiksilver, Roxy and 69 Slam, not to mention each and every podium placed winner received their very own pair of Shamal sunglasses. Not only did the top 3 receive prizes but every single competitor that registered also gained entry to the famous ‘Fun Cup Lucky Draw. So huge thanks to all our generous sponsors who added some outstanding prizes for the competitors to chase, adding an extra element of excitement to all involved.
The fun and racing always takes center stage but we must also remember why we run this event, all proceeds from the event including the first evenings celebrations at Tropical Mini Golf, go towards the Anh Sanh Orphanage, a wonderful charity taking care of those less fortunate, donations for this charity can be made all years round regardless of the Fun Cup event, if you would like more information on how to help this amazing cause please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. Let’s keep training hard for this fun event and worthy charity, hope to see you all again and some new faces for the 22nd edition on the 29th and 30th of January 2021.
